I do understand, but it still doesn't make sense. 1/4 of his bracket is completely hosed, and his 3 remaining Final 4 teams are a #2, #3, and a #4 seed--all high seeds. It's not like he picked Davidson to go all the way. Hey, I'm not a statistics knowing stuff type guy or anything, but... um, *feces*, I don't know. Go Georgetown! |

gleek, im not gonna go ALL the math on his bracket, but let's look at the elite eight in Round 1 1 Multiply Seed Round 2 2 Multiply Seed Round 3 4 Multiply Seed Round 4 7 Multiply Seed Round 5 10 Multiply Seed Round 6 15 Multiply Seed he has Gtown as round 6 (champ) so that's 30 points (2*15) he has Gtown and Stanford as round 5 (champ game) so thats 50 points (5*10) he has Gtown, Stanford, Wash St into the Final Four so that's 63 points (9*7) he has Gtown, Stanford, Wash St , Butler, Pitt and Duke into the Elite Eight 88 points (22*4) so I can see if he gets ALL those right from here on out him picking up another 220+ points I'm not going to look and do the math on the next round, but I'll assume CBS computers are right |

I think using the seed# as a multiplicative factor is excessive.
You can pretty much correctly pick a #8 seed to simply make the Final 4 (and subsequently get nothing else correct) and still get as many points as somebody who correctly picks 3 #1 seeds to make the Final 4, picks the winners of the semis, and correctly picks the winner of the tournament.
For example:
GHer #1 correctly picks a #8 seed to make the Final 4 (and get nothing else correct):
7 * 8 = 56
10 * 0 = 0
15 * 0 = 0
Total: 56 pts
GHer #2 correctly picks a 3 #1 seeds to make the Final 4 (and correctly picks the 2 semis and finals winner):
7 * 1 * 3 = 21
10 * 1 * 2 = 20
15 * 1 * 1 = 15
Total 56 pts

The seed multiplier was an experiment to see what happens. I figured there was a good chance it would blow up in my face, but would be entertaining nonetheless.
The goal was to keep a majority from getting eliminated too early, but it obviously fails if a person with one pick ends up winning over someone with many picks correct.
As the tournament continues, definitely give feedback on how you'd like the scoring for next year ("add seed" vs. "multiply seed" as well as how many pts for each round). Now's the time for us to figure out a good scoring/weighting method while it's still fresh in our minds. We'll have forgotten the details by next spring when it's time to set it up again.
It's not fair to change it now, midway through, but hopefully we come up with a good scoring system for next year.

Maybe reduce the multiplier?
Actually I kind of like it as it is. Granted I went chalk most of the way but as you can see stroh is on top by gambling. Yesterday Aske was on the bottom and now he is like Tiger (in contention) so it pays to gamble. If you're right you win big.
Ultimately it comes down to who picked the right underdog to go the furthest, not who picks the most correct.
