First week actually working at the new job........
« on: March 14, 2008, 03:15:25 PM »

a few maunderings.....

There is 'clean' trash, and there is nasty/foul trash.

Everyone should have to visit a landfill to actuall see what happens to their trash.

I worked 53 hours this week and moved around 43 tons of trash.  That is working baby!

I lost 8 pounds this week.  Soon, no more paunchyness.  By June, I should be a svelte 230 lbs or so.

This summer, I will be introduced to 'rolling rice'.  Disgusted

Very soon, I don't think there will be much of anything you can say or do that will be as disgusting as some of what I'll be dealing with daily.

How can people living in a 900 to 1100 sq foot house generate 3 to 4 cubic yards of trash per week?

Off to bathe and have a beer or 12.

Later.

I don't play golf anymore.   Well, maybe I do sort of.  I quit keeping score, started drinkning beer and I started playing better.

We recycle all we can.  With 4 people in our house we usually have two kitchen size bags of trash per week.  I see several of our neighbors, with fewer family members with the trash can overflowing every week.  I've wondered the same thing s you.

There was an article in our paper a year or so ago about the City's plan to surcharge for extra trash cans (beyond the one large one you get per residence).  A family was profiled -- two adults, two teenagers -- who had something like SEVEN city-provided trash cans and filled ALL OF THEM every week.

Mom ran some sort of business out of the home (zoned residential (I looked it up), but they glossed over that fact) and generated a good bit of paper waste.  And she didn't recycle it.  In fact, they did not have more than the city-provided two recycling bins, and they weren't complaining about needing more.

I've been running a licensed business (90% of my income) out of my zoned residential home for a few years now.  That's not a problem around here.  Is it elsewhere?

Conditions:

License limited to residents of home only
No objectionable parking
No display or selling from home

No ruling on excessive trash.

Three of us, recycle and even putting previously burnables in the trash, only one can-full a week.

We get about a half can a week on average and that's with 5 people. We have a recycle bin we fill up but that's a two week pick up.

More on topic, when I was on the sub we had to discard trash overboard. We would compact it into canisters. Everyone when the first get to the sub does kitchen duty (called cranking, don't ask me why I have no idea) and that was one of our duties. That was the worst job on the boat when underway.

We're some  recycling fools here.  We never come close to filling our trash can.

A. Good to see no liquor restrictions.
B.  If 1,000 dollar an hour prostitution income is only 10% of your income, you're doing a hell of a lot better than you lead on.

The recycling center in town was just taken over by a new company.  Went on my monthly trip, glass, plastic, aluminum, etc.  The new guys tell me "we no longer take glass unless you paid a deposit on it".  I ask what I'm supposed to do with the glass.  They tell me to drive about 30 miles to another center that will take it.  I ask what sense that makes with gas at 3.75 a gallon?  No answer.  My glass now goes to the landfill.    Sad

Well since the discussion went this direction......I was expecting some serious flak for working toward being a 'svelte' 230 lbs.   Tongue

I compost most every paper product that comes through the house;  tissues, cardboard rolls, cardboard, paper towels/plates, junk mail, newsprint, etc.  There is a stable out back and the owner/manager begs me to take all the manure I can use.  4 inches of paper/cardboard, then 4 inches of horse manure and repeat until the pile is about 3 feet high, composts really fast.  With the majority of commercial ink these days being soy based, I don't worry too much about heavy metals and the like in the ink.  In three weeks (that's when it gets turned and mixed the first time) most of the stuff is well on its way to joining the soil food web.   This makes great soil amendment material for garden beds.

We recycle everything possible.

We set out our 95 gallon toter about once a month and it is usually only half filled.
