The Two Hour Round - Fact, Fiction or Fancy?

As mentioned I lurk a few rules forums. You hear things. Without getting into the whos and wheres I'd like to ask about something I read today and in all honesty have read many times previously. Something along the lines of "I regularly play 18 holes in under two hours." Now that just doesn't strike me as reality. Even when alone, in a cart, on an empty course, playing out of your head, not pulling flagsticks and so forth I think two hours is a real stretch. Not to say it doesn't happen and although I've never played a two hour round I've come very close to a one hour nine holes before. But regularly under two hours? Am I right in calling ? For the record, my usual Sunday round is 4-4:30 hours. There are usually four players and even when there are only two the course is busy enough you have to wait. We don't play fast as we're out to have fun and score well. But we don't play slow either and nothing bugs me more than having groups wait on me. My usual weekday nine is two players on a wide open course. It usually takes about 1:45. Again, no rush, we're walking, we putt everything out and try to play well. Sometimes they stretch to two hours if we have to search for a ball or two during the round. My June and July solo nines at 6:00 AM (first out) are where I almost pull off the one hour nine. Still, I don't think I've ever done it. Maybe 1:10 or so is the best ever. Possibly could pull it off with a cart but certainly not very often at all. Regular two hour 18 hole rounds? I'm just not seeing it. I think internet bravado comes into play here. Which is a good point actually. I don't think I've ever heard a person brag of even a single two hour round face-to-face.

i have walked 9 holes many times in 1:10-1:15 in the early morning hours. but i am an exception to every rule of golf in that i never take a practice swing on a full shot and play to a single digit. 98% of the golfing public A: isn't that good and B: doesn't play that fast. most people that i have played with are taken aback by how soon i hit the ball after arriving on the tee or at my ball in the fairway. so playing regularly and given a cart could i crack 2 hours often? the answer would be yes. but as i said, i am the exception not the rule. in answer to your question i would say you are right in calling

i've played a few 9's in the 1:15 range but that was largely at schitty park where it's in your best interest to play as fast as possible to avoid injury! LOL. -- not that enjoyable to be rushing around and so forth.
i'd say honestly that around here in normal season, i could cut my rounds down (in theory, wide open course, etc) down 30 minutes if i could just find a lot of my shots easier/faster. unfortunately, almost all decent yet affordable courses around here are full of blind shots and sloped fairways leading to rollout of who knows where..... or feature massive tree lined fairways where once the ball goes in it's usually lost.

If they put them on Bandon Trails I might pay $80 to go watch guys keel over sprinting up Heart Attack Hill between 13 and 14.

I don't think I've ever heard a person brag of even a single two hour round face-to-face. I've played 18 on a regulation course in under two hours. And I'd squat down and say that to your face, too. Back when I was decent (mid- to low-80s and narrow score distribution), if you put me on a private course or a muni-on-a-weekday so I never had to wait on anyone in front, and you let me play as a single so I never had to wait on a playing companion, I could play a round in two hours, give or take. If these two-hour guys are playing mostly on the weekends, they're full of *feces*. If they're playing municipal courses when anyone else is on them, they're full of *feces*. If they're playing in threesomes or foursomes, they're full of *feces*. IMFO. (The above does not apply to George HW Bush or to George W Bush. Having a Secret Service cowcatcher isn't fair.)

When I was traveling a lot I would sometimes (as often as I could get away with it) schedule my Thursday return to be in the mid-afternoon range. Straight to the course from the airport and I could play with only about 3-4 other groups on the course. Id' go out as a single, with a cart (the course required em at the time), play quickly but not rushed, play right through an occasional group, and would still take 2 1/2 hours to play 18. Regularly... under 2 hours.... Perhaps its Clive's regular sized legs that has us hobbits beat

There's a Strider joke in there somewhere.
But I just can't bring myself to go that geeky.
