Weak [Politics/Religion]

Time to don the wool shirt and talk politics.

http://sports.espn.go.com...&source=ESPNHeadlines

Quote
On the same day activists scaled the Golden Gate Bridge protesting China's policies in Tibet, presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) called on President Bush to boycott the opening ceremony for this summer's Beijing Olympics.

...

"The violent clashes in Tibet and the failure of the Chinese government to use its full leverage with Sudan to stop the genocide in Darfur are opportunities for Presidential leadership," Clinton said in a statement. "These events underscore why I believe the Bush administration has been wrong to downplay human rights in its policy towards China. At this time, and in light of recent events, I believe President Bush should not plan on attending the opening ceremonies in Beijing, absent major changes by the Chinese government."

Good idea or not, isn't this just a lame ass way of taking a shot at the president without having to get behind something extremely controversial like boycotting the whole thing?  Zero exposure for her and the talking knuckleheads will give her a day or two of free press.

Typical of her in speaking 90+% to what everyone else is doing wrong and not presenting solutions of her own.

That didn't come out right.
It's not supposed to come all the way out.

In my view, nations should put aide politics and send their athletes in the highest example of sportsmanship.  The Olympics present fierce competition, grace whether in victory or defeat, unity, fellowship, fraternity.  The Games should stand an example of how men find the common principles that hold them together, not seize the issues that drive them apart.  You don't boycott the Olympics -- ANY OF IT -- to make a political statement.  You want to make a statement?  Stand at a podium and make your *goshdarn* statement.

This whole thing stinks of politics and Clintorius.

And *fudge* them, too.

Well, in reality, I think it's more a "don't *fudge* the little guy" thing with me.  My distinction is that I can't justify punishing the athletes for the doings of the IOC.  One should not punish the athletes -- those who've trained and dreamed since forever -- because one disagrees with the decision of the IOC.

But if an athlete wants to make that statement and thereby subject himself to praise, ridicule, expulsion from the Village and team, ... so be it.  At least it didn't prevent any of the other several hundred US athletes from competing.

Unfortunately the Olympics became politicized at the very millisecond that Gleeks picture was taken in 1968.

Even then it was still a pure competition.  The individual politics didn't have the stench of professionalism which started at Seoul and has in twenty short years ruined the games.   The Olympics are cool from as straight spectator value but they can keep the "for the love of sport" bull*feces* they try to cram down our throats now.  At least in the Summer Games anyway.  The Winter Games still can pull it off in some disciplines but the Summer Games are shot.

I liked your other response.  Of course, I think it was something about East German he-shes which always stirs my loins.

Yeah but then I re-read it this morning and it was about 180 degrees off of what you had typed when I originally thought I was parallel (it happens a lot).  Undecided
