Stupid Dogs
« on: April 14, 2008, 03:45:42 PM » |

My parents had their dog put down today and I find myself feeling very sad about it. The reality is that he was old, had bad arthritis, was deaf, and was becoming neurotic and crazy (he bit my dad yesterday, which was really the final straw) so they did the right thing, but I can't help but have incredibly mixed feelings. He was a good dog. My older brother once said "the cruelest trick nature ever played is that a dog will live 15 years if you're lucky, and a turtle will live to 100."

And an even less-affectionate geoduck will live 146.

I like caravans more.
Sorry spacers. I've put two dogs down in the past three years. Blubbered like a hockey goalie both times.

My mom and step-dad had an old Lab/some kind of pointer mix that they had to put down last year. She got sick, they took her to the vet for an exploratory surgery, and that was it. Belle was such a sweet dog that even the vet cried. It's tough.

Two years ago I held ours as she breathed her final breath. Bawled like Larry Miller speaking of Karl Malone. I can only imagine how sad my dad is tonight. I don't know why we continue to think having dogs is a good idea.

I don't know why we continue to think having dogs is a good idea. I think experiencing the sadness of losing a pet once every decade or so keeps you human. It's a way to tear down the emotional wall built from years of denying yourself Celine Dion music.

Recently I had to put our cat down, he was only 5 years old, but was in a bad way due to FIV. Whilst it was sad to see him go the whole process actually was rather hilarious. On the day all I could book was a vet appointment after work. Once the deed was done, the vet gave me the option of taking the cat with me to bury at home (in a biodegradeble bag and canvas sack). As it was now about 7:00pm I asked the vet if I should put the cat into the spare freezer in the garage at home as I wouldn't be able to dig a hole until the weekend. (the soil around our way is all clay, so digging a sizeable hole takes a while). The vet said that was ok. So get home and put the cat in the freezer. Two days later, Saturday morning get up to dig a hole. About an hour later hole is dog. Go to get the cat out of the freezer and cat is frozen solid. Walk past the kitchen window balancing cat on my hand, mrs twoiron is horrified. Cat overbalances and lands on the decking with thud. ooops! Walk over to the hole to put cat in. Cat is to big for the hole Because the cat is frozen I can't make it fit in the hole. After some more digging manage to make the hole big enough for the cat to fit in. Fill in the hole and went and had a beer.
