The Kaiser polling, conducted April 3-13, surveyed a nationally representative sample of 2,003 adults, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

pfft. not only do i not know someone has thought about doing this, or done it, i've never heard of anyone doing it. polls are useless and can be made to say anything you want them to say. especially a small sampling like this.

I don't know anyone who has done it either, but in today's world, and the price of carrying health coverage. I could certainly find it plausible.

according to the linked article, 7% of Americans said they or someone in their household decided to marry in the last year so they could get health care benefits via their spouse. not 7% of the people polled, 7% of Americans. that would be 21,000,000. more responsible journalism.

I don't have a horse in this race but kinda gotta agree with birdy on this one. 7% of Americans = roughly 21,000,000. In the last year? Nope. Doesn't pass the smell test. http://marriage.lifetips....et-married-each-year.htmlDid you know that 90%-95% of all Americans will marry at some time during their life? In 1999 about 2 million 300 thousand Americans married according to National Center for Health Statistics (Sept. 6, 2000). So this number rose from 2.3M to 21M in 8 years? More info: http://www.census.gov/com...s_marriages_divorces.htmlAccording to the spread sheet I pulled up, here are the total marriages per year: 2006: 2,160,000 2005: 2,249,000 2004: 2,749,000 2003: 2,245,000 2002: 2,254,000 2001: 2,345,000 2000: 2,329,000 1999: 2,358,000 etc. etc. etc. For the 7% number to be accurate you would have to go back and say every marriage over the past ~4.5 years (with 2 people per marriage) was for health coverage, not just in the past year.

To be clear, I'm not saying this doesn't happen. I'm sure it does. The numbers in this story simply don't add up.

In a poll released today, 7% of Americans said they or someone in their household decided to marry in the last year so they could get healthcare benefits via their spouse. Perhaps it's inartfully worded or maybe it's just me, but I thought it was implied that they meant RELEVANT respondents. Seemed kind of obvious that they aren't including minors in a marriage statistic, or those who've already been married for >1 year in this particular statistic, for example.

That was how I interpreted it, too, so it's not just you. ...That could be a positive or negative thing.
