Is the horseracing industry breeding these animals to be too tall and too muscular for their skinny legs in order to squeeze every last ounce of speed out of them?

I went to the OTB and made a few bets, including the chalk, and I came out ahead by a few bucks. My brother, meanwhile, had my daughter pick three horses.....and hit the trifecta for $3400+ on a $2 bet (although he did place other bets as well). He's putting 10% in the college fund for a finders fee.

Is the horseracing industry breeding these animals to be too tall and too muscular for their skinny legs in order to squeeze every last ounce of speed out of them? sure seems crazy, i have never followed anything really except the "big 3" on tv, maybe this is commonplace in all the buildup races anyways, it was so crazy , didnt even happen while running hard.... post race... they were very very cautious in how they framed showing the replay of it, couldn't even really tell what happened.

I don't ever go out of my way to watch racing on TV, but I did happen to see Go For Wand break down during the Breeder's Cup on live TV. I didn't realize how quickly they come out to put the horse down. Very sad. I remember seeing these photos (warning: images may be disturbing) in SI afterward and thinking how cruel it is for humans to train these animals to keep running no matter how much pain they're feeling. Of course, I've since forgotten about this aspect of racing until something like this happens again.

I do have some qualms with horseracing, but that didn’t stop me from going to a Derby party, and legally betting money which then funds the industry. Then when the horse broke down I felt sick and contemplated whether or not I should bet money again in the future. Then they posted the trifecta….and there was much rejoicing.
