The Best U.S. Open (That I 'member) Evar?
« on: June 17, 2008, 06:41:20 AM » |

I'll give you a topic...The 2008 US Open... ...It one was one part Venturi in the heat. With a dash of Hogan after the accident. It was two parts Buster Douglass versus Mike Tyson. It was like buttah. The course was beautiful, it was a stern test of golf but according to players one and all it was fair, once again par was king without making the best players in the world look like, well, me. Discuss.

Gotta be on the list.
I did not know that Mediate was actually a qualifier.
Think about how awesome that is!

Oh, it's highly plausible that you missed that nugget. As it was sent out in very small information packets amongst the continual droning deluge that let us know; Should he win, he would be the oldest to do so. (Steve Jones in '96 was a qualifier. What the hell happened to him?) Hmmm. Best evar? It was kick ass, no doubt! Looking back (for me) as far as story lines..... Stewart and McPhilson at Pinhurst was pretty good. And Tiger's utter embarrassment of the field at Pebble in 2k.

I think the big thing this Open had going for it was the drama (assuming you're not a lostgolfballs.com customer). The course was perfect and utterly non-controversial. The weather was perfect all tournament -- no battling the wind, no cold day, no rain, no unexpected dry conditions the USGA had to fight against. The actual golf on display was good, but I wouldn't call it stellar.

All in all probably the best Open I've seen. I also thought the set-up was perfect this year.
Friday afternoon with Phil and Tiger was one of the best back nine's I've seen until Saturday afternoon. And Monday was the best US open playoff evar. So hard to get any better than that IMO.

I was going to be flip and give you a horse-racing result, but it's a bit too Rob Bishop-esque for me to post "Big Brown."

I went thru my tapes, (used to tape all the majors). A couple of US Opens, had some drama, Pavin at Shinnecock is a good watch, and like Stroh said Stewart at Pinehurst (also memorable for Daly smacking a moving ball on those Ross greens), also Stewart at The Olympic Club. Tigers win at Pebble is actually quite boring, other than his expletive outburst on 18 in round three (little did he know he was then playing his last ball), it was a rout early. Several opens had the Lehman/Montgomerie/Love III misses/collapses/chokes.
But this one...whew...I'm tellin' ya.
Only time will tell, heard one of the pundits say this would have been th biggest sports upset of all time. Doubt that much, but it would have been huge.
Overnight I became a huge Rocco fan, man if I could just have kids again I would have a boy just to name him Rocco.
