Ya'll Got Sonic?
« on: June 27, 2008, 12:20:33 PM » |

Apparently we just had our first one (in Minnesota) open in the Twin Cities Metro area.
Seems the place has been so over run that the police have had to do day and night traffic control around the joint. Just so people can in and out of it for about 6 blocks. (Same thing happened with Krispy Kreme)
Is the joint that good? Or is it just Minnesota rubes fraught with something new?

We've had them here for years. I've never eaten there.

from experience of having to put up with a parent with a sick sonic fetish growing up, let me tell you, sonic pretty much sucks ass. across the board, it's bad to... mediocre, at best. the only remotely interesting items are the specialty drinks. we had one just open here 6 months or so ago (1st in PGH area) and it's always crowded. i gave it one try to see if it was actually any better than i remembered... and it was worse. probably the most bland, greasy, lukewarm $6 burger combo on the planet. besides all that, who wants to sit in their car burning $4/gallon gas to keep the AC and stereo on to eat nowadays anyways. hate !

Sonic is headquartered in OKC so we have had one on every street corner for years.
Food is just decent. Tater Tots are good, fries meh, burgers meh, chicken sandwiches are pretty good, ice cream stuff is good, they also have very good ice for their soft drinks. My mom gets diet cokes there every day. Some of the breakfast stuff is decent like the breakfast burrito and bistro egg, cheese and sausage sandwich. I'd recommend the foot long chilli cheese dog with tater tots if you eat their for lunch.
Otherwise you aren't missing much.

I see Sonic commercials on tv all the time, but the nearest one to me is about 1.5 hours away near Sacramento.

No doubt the majority but plenty of imported rubes who miss Sonic as well. There isn't a food product around that I'd wait in a 6 block line for, let alone a burger joint.

The first NJ store opened not long ago. I drove by it by chance and stopped in. The burgers are basically your run of the mill patty with a bunch of *feces* piled on it. The whole process (and ordering and getting your food IS a process) is an exercise in making the simple, difficult. I'm sure it is a mob scene since it takes forever to get your damn food, and they won't let you in the building to just get it for yourself.
Another mystery is why they serve the sloppiest burgers in a place where you eat in your car.
Is it me, or do their fries and rings taste like they're seasoned with sugar?
Once was enough for me.

I've seen people in other forums I'm on make a big deal about getting a Sonic and I've never understood why. It's not bad, but it's not anything special either. It's usually a bit slow and more expensive than other fast food joints.
I guess it must be like Coors used to be thought of when you could only get it west of the Mississippi.

lol. My dad told me about going to a convention in NYC years ago where guys made a huge deal about the fact that we could buy Coors in Utah. He laughed and said "yeah, but why would you want to?" Smokey and the Bandit is still wicked awesome, though.
