another presidential candidate bashing thread.

just out of curiosity, can anyone guess which of the two was the chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee two times (6 years), which has direct control over influencing CAFE standards ? answer is the same guy who is now trying to say we need to increase them |

Arizona Sen. John McCain didn’t expect an enthusiastic response this morning when he touted the need for higher fuel standards to the Detroit Economic Club. No surprise, the crowd didn’t exactly embrace the idea.
Asked how raising Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards was “different than raising taxes,” McCain acknowledged he didn’t think his proposal would be very popular. “I know, I said it’s a tough issue. CAFE standards have to be improved. There’s too much pollution in the environment, there’s too much dependency on foreign oil and we’re going to have to take a number of steps,” McCain told the crowd.
He finished his answer to dead silence.
“I noticed no applause,” McCain deadpanned, which drew a few laughs and some clapping from the crowd. I don't follow CAFE too closely, so help me out, someone. How is raising the CAFE a bad thing for auto makers? "Raise your vehicles' fuel efficiency, and people will buy more of them." What am I missing?  |

I don't follow CAFE too closely, so help me out, someone. How is raising the CAFE a bad thing for auto makers? "Raise your vehicles' fuel efficiency, and people will buy more of them." What am I missing? what people are you referring to? the majority of consumers don't want small cars, which is exactly what cafe standards demand. |

Are the Japanese and Korean cars that much smaller than their US counterparts?

that depends. which cars are you referring to? comparing the mid sized "family" cars from each with the same size engine. kia optima 21/31 toyota corolla 22/30 chevy malibu 22/30 none of which meets the current standard. my family won't fit in a yaris or a spectrum. the only cars that get any better mileage are the hybrids or the micro boxes. |

If the CAFE goes up, EVERY manufacturer must meet it or pay the penalty. So why does Detroit feel so personally picked on? |

it's not just detroit that's bitching. Toyota has been one of the most outspoken critics of the cafe standards.
no one can meet the coming standards without the consumer making drastic changes in their lifestyle.

I guess I'd have to repeat, then: if they all have to downsize engines and/or the vehicles those engines must propel, then it's not like the consumer can walk away from Detroit (or Toyota) and buy a big-ass car from Manufacturer X. |
