only reason for their profitability.

Quote
Aggressive fuel hedging
Rampaging fuel prices now represent around 40 percent of an airline's costs, but, as usual, Southwest Airlines has been ahead of the curve. Since 1999, the airline's aggressive fuel-hedging program has saved it an estimated $3.5 billion. In the first quarter, for example, it paid $1.98 a gallon for fuel, approximately a dollar less than its network competitors. And Southwest's future position is admirable: It is 70 percent hedged at $51 a barrel through the end of the year and 55 percent hedged at the same price next year.

In a world of $140-a-barrel oil, suggesting that any airline is a guaranteed winner is beyond hubris. But this much can be said: Southwest Airlines is sitting on a pile of cash and fuel hedges and has a proven and easily adaptable service model. And history shows that Southwest has comfortably survived every airline-industry downturn, then grown rapidly and profited hugely when the business cycle turns.

The "only reason"? You make it sound like they just lucked into their dominant market position. You don't put yourself into that position unless you have incredible foresight.

Flying 50 kids and parents to Florida for an AAU Basketball Tourney this Saturday.  Southwest offered the best fares, best customer service, and best perks (2 checked bags for free).  I see why they're head and shoulders above the other airlines.

not at all. but the rest of the article is just fluff. if they are paying the same price for fuel as their competitors, their losing money plain and simple. it was a great play.

Have to disagree.  The rest of the article explains why they've been so healthy for two decades and will continue to be so.  I have many friends who are airline pilots and no matter who they work for they all agree with the points in that article.  Many of them would switch if pilot jobs weren't so incredibly tied to seniority.

I've read that article previously and don't remember if they mention that SWA is the only US airline which did not lay guys off after 9/11.  The entire industry took it right in the nuts and SWA sailed right through.

I have a friend in Atlanta (take a guess) right now qualifying for a particular plane (not just model - as he's already qualified for the plane - but how it is configured) and route (flying to Orlando is different from flying to Oahu is different from flying to Paris.)  SWA pilots never do this.  One plane; one class of route.  How much do you think it costs Delta every time they have a guy move from 757 to 757ER?

Every point in that article is well made and entirely accurate.

And I drive two Hondas.   Devil

Every time I have ever flown this airline it has been great. The people on the plane are (for the most part) friendly, the flight attendants are always in a party mood and it seems like every flight is going to Daytona Beach for spring break. Or maybe it just seems that way because I tend to drink on SWA.
