Geez, I felt like I was reading a Michelle Wie thread on FGI. I only watched the final two events and missed the Chinese on beam, but my wife was glued to the TV for all of it. She said the Chinese just looked better and did better. I think the article's author overlooked that Memmel was out and that the new format (only 3 gymnasts per apparatus, no scores dropped) made things a crapshoot. One thing we noticed on floor was how the US athletes were ALL flirting with the lines in the corners, compared to the Chinese athletes. US gymnasts started wedged into the corner, yet finished very near (if not over) the opposite corner. The Chinese girls actually started their tumbling passes standing a meter or so in from the corner, and they were landing one or two meters inside the apparatus at the opposite corner. Striking difference in distance needed.

You think it helped that the Chinese were 4' tall 14 year olds, as opposed to the 5' tall 16 year old Americans The US made mistakes, China made fewer - *feces* happens.

The competition last night reminded me of the time a few years ago when my Greenjackets team, 8 year olds, let me down when they lost the fall league championship game by 4 runs. We had the lead going into the last inning when Daniel Lewis let an easy fly ball go over his head, opening the floodgates. I haven't picked a kid with two first names since.

Asked about the records that appear to call Yang's age into question, International Gymnastics Federation secretary general Andrei Gueisbuhler said he couldn't comment without seeing them.
"If I don't have written proof of something ... we have to take for granted the passports that we've seen and have been checked by the IOC are OK," Gueisbuhler said.
Though the International Olympic Committee was in contact with the gymnastics federation and Chinese officials over the eligibility questions, president Jacques Rogge said Saturday it was clearly a FIG issue.
"The IOC relies on the international federations, who are exclusively responsible for the eligibility of athletes," Rogge said. "It's not the task of the IOC to check every one of the 10,000 athletes."

That's nothing compared to figure skaters (including the male ones).

I firmly believe this:
Any 'Sport' that uses a panel of judges isn't actually a sport, it's an 'Entertainment'.
There's nothing wrong with it, but let's not confuse people competing to see who can jump the highest, run the fastest, or put a ball through a hoop the most times with people pandering to a group of other people for some type of arbitrary 'Score'.

Fastest. Highest. Strongest.
That is all.

Not to worry. I don't consider anything that features diving to be real sport either....
