I'd be torn, but realizing that it's not going to hurt the oil company and only affect the retail distributor itself, I'd probably tell them it's wrong.

I benefited from a similar screw up not long ago, only saving $1 /gal.

Blader Jr, bless his heart, said a couple of times that maybe we should go in and tell someone in the store about the screw up.

I guess I taught him a poor lesson in ethics when I got down on the street and started waving people in, yelling, "Free Gas!!!"

I do see a difference, but it is a stretch.

In the ATM example the bills have known and unambiguous value, its written right on them - you cannot claim you thought it was correct.  A price for goods on the other hand - you could claim that you believed it to be correct.  Sure, at $0.38/gallon only a absolute fool would think such; but there is some merit for an argument  Wink

It would be like me walking into a store to buy maxi pads - I have absolutely no price reference for them at all.  If they were marked 20 for $2, I'd have to believe it.  Just sayin.

With all the hoopla about gas though - you'd be claiming yourself to be a tremendously huge idiot to make such an argument  Grin

If I were filling up with my kid in the car, I fill up and leave.

If by myself ... I'm weird in that I value relationships with businesses.  If it were a gas station I went to frequently and the owners/operators were nice, I'd pop in and say something.  If it were a random gas station I stopped at on the way somewhere, I'd probably just gas-n-go.

I see the argument for letting some doofus know he's made a pricing error.  But part of me also thinks that when it comes to arm's-length commerce, it's not my responsibility to look out for the merchant's best interests or double-check him to make sure he's not made any errors.

I wanted to hurry up and fill up before they noticed.  I only saved about $25.  It was my 6th or 7th fill up in a long chautauqua, taken into the heart of americana, where each fill up was costing me ~$100.

I just sort of enjoyed having a chance what it feels like to win the lottery for once.  Morality was in the back seat, snoozing away oblivously.

To think, I initially was about to pull into the station next door!  For a brief moment, I imagined this is what Louis and Clark must've felt like the first time they stood over the Columbia River valley.

I of course meant after I prepaid and filled my tank.
