obviously i'm from a slightly younger generation, but I couldn't agree more.  My dad would always kick the TV over to one of his movies when it was on...  great actor, greater person (at least from what I know of his charity and longtime marriage, etc)

'zactly. I obviously didn't know him personally but everything I read/saw about how he conducted his personal life was good. Many in Hollywood would do well to do the same.

One of the greats. Sad that Fast Eddie , Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy, Brick Pollitt, Hud Bannon, John Russell, Judge Roy Bean, Henry Gondorff, Reggie 'Reg' Dunlop, Murphy, Michael Colin Gallagher, Doc Hudson are gone.

Thank Goodness them movies last forever.

Class act until the end. I think one of his most under-appreciated performances was his portrayal of Frank Galvin in The Verdict.

I'm going to guess I was the last person on this board to see him. We sat right behind his pit box at CCWS Portland 3 years ago, and he was very much in attendance...

He will be missed. They need to rename the  Long Beach race after him.
